Kerste Helms
Trip Host - Baja
Welcome to Honest Heart Journeys! My name is Kerste and I love guiding people into deeper connection — whether it’s with nature, each other, or their own inner journey. With decades of experience teaching both adults and kids, I bring a spirit of mutual respect, curiosity, and play to everything I do.
Our Baja trips offer a chance to unplug and be fully present: paddling along dramatic coastlines, hiking wild terrain, and snorkeling vibrant coral reefs, all while soaking in the quiet rhythm of the land and sea.
I see the environment as a wise teacher — always offering lessons about balance, harmony, and resilience. I love designing experiences around the book Gift from the Sea that invite full engagement, deep reflection, and learning through doing. Inspiring conversations, starlit skies, and meaningful group connections are all part of the journey.
I also facilitate the HHJ partnership with our local guides — wonderful humans who love this land and water like family. Their generosity in sharing their stories, traditions, and environmental wisdom adds depth to every moment. Their respect for this incredible part of the world is contagious; you’ll feel it in every paddle stroke and every quiet moment on shore.
Experiencing La Paz during Day of the Dead at the end of our journey adds a powerful layer of reflection and celebration. The local altars, food, and festivities are moving reminders of the deep human connections that transcend cultures and generations.
I'm thrilled to co-lead this journey with Monnie Brodbeck, a cherished friend of over 30 years. Together, we bring a spirit of collaboration, humor, and ease that only lifelong friends can offer. Our shared love for wild places, thoughtful conversation, and spontaneous activity creates a warm, welcoming atmosphere where everyone feels part of the adventure.
At home in Bellevue, Washington, I teach preschool and stay active in church life and time with family. My hobbies include learning Spanish, gardening with native plants, baking, reading, and hiking. I have two grown children — one in Seattle and one in Austin, TX.
I'm a seasoned traveler and camper — I've been to all 50 U.S. states and travel farther afield every chance I get!
For me, learning is lived, and community is built one shared moment at a time.
I can't wait to see you in Baja!
