Kerste Helms loves guiding people into deeper connection—whether it’s with nature, each other, or their own inner journey. With decades of experience teaching adults and kids, she brings a spirit of mutual respect, curiosity, and play to everything she does. Her Baja trips are a chance to unplug and get present: paddling along dramatic coastlines, hiking wild terrain, and snorkeling coral reefs while soaking in the quiet rhythm of the land and sea.

Kerste sees the environment as a wise teacher—full of lessons about balance, harmony, and resilience. She designs experiences with our book, Gift from the Sea, that invite you to engage fully, reflect deeply, and learn by doing. Inspiring conversations, starlit skies, and group connection are all part of the mix. 

Kerste facilitates the HHJ partnership with our local guides who love this land and water like family. Their generosity in sharing it—along with stories, traditions, and environmental wisdom—makes the journey rich. Their respect for this corner of the world is contagious, and you’ll feel it in every paddle stroke and quiet moment on the shore. Experiencing La Paz during Day of the Dead at the end of our journey adds a beautiful layer of reflection and celebration—local altars, food, and celebrations remind us of the deep human connections between cultures and generations.

She’s thrilled to co-lead this journey with Monnie Brodbeck, a cherished friend of over 30 years. Together, they bring a spirit of collaboration, humor, and ease that only longtime friends can offer. Their shared love for wild places, thoughtful conversation, and spontaneous activity creates a welcoming atmosphere where everyone feels part of the adventure.

When at home in Bellevue, WA, where she lives with her husband, Chris and dog Diego, she teaches preschool and enjoys church activities and connecting with family. Her hobbies are learning Spanish, gardening with native plants, baking, reading and hiking. She has two grown children who live in Seattle and Austin, TX. She's a seasoned traveler and camper who has been to all 50 US states and travels farther afield every chance she gets!
