Alaska - When Wilderness Speaks
Venture into the wild, where the quiet is spacious enough to hear yourself think, the unfamiliar invites new perspective, and the ordinary begins to feel sacred again.
Denali • Resurrection Bay • Seward, Alaska

“I valued getting to know a group of women in a more authentic, sincere, and honest way than I've ever experienced in my life.” — Jeanene, CA
Trip Overview
From the vast landscapes of Denali to the glacier-carved waters of Resurrection Bay, Alaska invites us beyond the noise of everyday life and into a wilderness spacious enough to hear ourselves think again. Soar above Denali, paddle remote coastal waters, hike beneath towering mountains, and spend nights immersed in the quiet of the wild.
Away from familiar distractions, we begin to notice more—the world around us, the sensations within us, and thoughts we may not have had space to hear. This is an invitation to come out of our heads and into our hearts. Wilderness can bring uncertainty and discomfort, but it can also open us to new perspective, deeper knowing, and the freedom to see what has been there all along.
Our companion book, An Altar in the World by Barbara Brown Taylor, invites us to become more awake to the sacred already present—in our bodies, in nature, in uncertainty, and in the ordinary moments we often overlook. Through ceremony, conversation, journaling, and time in nature, we'll practice slowing down, listening, and paying attention.
Perhaps, in the vastness and quiet of Alaska, we become still enough to hear ourselves more clearly and listen for the sacred in the everyday.
2027 Itinerary
Highlights
The Place & Wildlife
Let the wilderness become your teacher.
Fly above Denali. Paddle the quiet waters of Resurrection Bay. Hike beneath Alaska's towering peaks and spend nights in remote wilderness cabins.
Here, the landscape asks little of us except our attention.
Sisterhood in the Wilderness
Journey together. Listen together.
Some conversations happen after a day on the water. Others emerge in shared silence.
Travel with a small circle of thoughtful women who value meaningful connection, curiosity, and the freedom to experience a place—and themselves—more deeply.
The Book & Inner Journey
Pay attention to what is here.
An Altar in the World becomes our companion for seeing Alaska, and ourselves, with fresh eyes.
Through the physical experience of wilderness - cold water, mountain air, effort, silence, uncertainty, awe - we’re invited to become more present to what is here.
The Experience
Let Us Host Your Journey
Adventure companies can take you into the wilderness. At Honest Heart Journeys, we create space to experience it deeply—and listen to what it has to say.
Mary and Jen bring decades of experience in thoughtful travel and event curation, along with a genuine commitment to creating space where women can be fully present—with themselves, one another, and the place they’re experiencing.
Our Trip Book
An Altar in the World
by Barbara Brown Taylor
“What if the sacred isn't somewhere else?”
Taylor invites us to discover the sacred in ordinary life—in walking, paying attention, feeling, getting lost, embracing uncertainty, and opening ourselves to wonder.
The book becomes our companion for Alaska, helping us notice how the wilderness around us reflects the wilderness within us—and how that way of seeing can follow us home.
Activity Level
This journey blends kayaking and hiking with opportunities to explore at your own pace. Guests should be comfortable walking several miles on uneven terrain with moderate elevation gain.
No kayaking experience is necessary. Our guides teach the skills, and we paddle in stable double kayaks with a partner. Those choosing glacier ice hiking should be prepared for harder exertion and elevation gain.
Share Your Experience
Through reflection, conversation, ceremony, journaling, and invitation—not instruction—we weave the inner journey naturally into the adventure, creating space to notice more, listen more deeply, and experience the journey together.
Accommodations
Our accommodations balance comfort, authentic character, and connection to place.
We’ll begin and end in an Anchorage hotel. While kayaking in Resurrection Bay, remote cabins place us right in the heart of the wilderness, while our own cozy Seward lodge offers a comfortable home base for exploring and gathering. Shared accommodations in the wilderness are part of the the intimacy and spirit of this journey.
Fresh Local Fare
Expect hearty, nourishing, relaxed meals—and some of the best seafood of your life, including wild salmon and halibut during peak summer season.
We'll enjoy Anchorage's diverse food scene and Seward's cozy bakeries, harbor spots, and fresh-caught fare. Dietary preferences and food sensitivities can be accommodated whenever possible.
Weather
Mid-August brings cool late-summer temperatures and variable conditions. Anchorage averages highs in the low-to-mid 60s, while Seward and Resurrection Bay are cooler and damper, with frequent breezes and showers.
Layers and quality rain protection are essential.

You'll receive a detailed planning guide several months before departure.
Key essentials include moisture-wicking layers, waterproof rain gear, sturdy water-resistant hiking shoes, and a reliable day pack. Pack light and portable—you'll be moving between wilderness and town.
