Honest Heart JourneysEntrepreneurship is often portrayed as a story of momentum: the big idea, the leap of faith, the growth, and ultimately, the success.
But what happens when the beginning is over? When the excitement fades, the work becomes heavier, and the energy that once came naturally suddenly has to be summoned?
For Jennifer Dale, founder of Honest Heart Journeys, that became one of the most important questions of her entrepreneurial journey.
Dale shares her experience in “Reigniting the Why,” her chapter in the newly released The Entrepreneurial Ascent, which brings together the stories and hard‑earned lessons of 32 entrepreneurs navigating the realities behind building a business.
For Dale, the answer wasn’t to work harder. It was to remember why she started.
“When the business becomes heavy, you have to reignite your why. Not the polished version of it, or the version that sounds good in marketing language, but the real one.”
That moment came toward the end of Dale’s third year building Honest Heart Journeys. The business had become more complex, the initial momentum had softened, and she felt heavier and less resilient than she had expected.
So she returned to the beginning.
WHY DID I START THIS?
Dale remembered that she hadn’t founded Honest Heart Journeys simply to create a travel company. She wanted to build a circle—a place where women could step outside the noise of ordinary life, travel together, connect honestly, and remember themselves in community.
She had seen how much loneliness and disconnection women can carry, even when their lives appear full from the outside. That was the real why.
And reconnecting with it changed the way she saw the business: not a travel company that happens to build community, but a community that happens to travel together.
FROM BUSINESS TO LEGACY
As Dale returned to that original purpose, another layer emerged: legacy.
She realized she didn’t only want to build something for the women traveling with her today. She wanted to create something that could be carried forward.
“That discovery lit me up again,” Dale writes. “It gave the work a wider horizon and reminded me that entrepreneurship is not only about what can be built today but also what can be carried forward.”
That perspective has become particularly meaningful at 60, as Dale continues to build while asking a deeper question: What is worth building in the first place?
Her chapter also explores the human side of entrepreneurship—the danger of becoming buried in the weeds of daily tasks, the importance of protecting the energy required for visionary work, and the recognition that founders cannot and should not do everything themselves.
At the center of it all are relationships.
For Dale, people are not simply part of the business; they are its foundation. Honest Heart Journeys is built on the belief that trust cannot be manufactured through polished messaging. Women are trusting the company with meaningful threshold moments in their lives, and that requires care, honesty, generosity, and grace.
Today, Honest Heart Journeys is growing woman by woman, conversation by conversation, and journey by journey. Travel is how the circle comes together in person; the relationship continues after the trip ends.
Dale’s entrepreneurial journey has ultimately become about more than building a successful company. It is about building something that reflects who she is, serves a need she deeply believes in, and can continue beyond her.
The lesson she offers other entrepreneurs is simple: When the beginning is over, don’t assume the answer is to push harder. Return to the reason you began. Sometimes the why that started the business is exactly what can carry it into its next chapter.
